Getting a custom, or tailored fit, in shoes. It makes all the difference.
Probably the single greatest advantage to buying your very own pair of Standard Handmade shoes or boots is the fact that you get the option for a custom fit, at no extra charge.
What is a custom fit?
Think of it like getting your suit tailored when or after you buy it. The chest is tightened up, the pant tapered and hemmed, etc… Only in the case of shoes, they are tailored to fit your feet before they are made, so we have to get the measurements beforehand. Unlike fabric, leather cannot be unstitched and re-stitched because once you take the stitches out, holes are left behind. And who wants to wear shoes with old stitching holes exposed?!
Your shoes should hug, not restrict your feet, even when there is no weight on them. Then, when you put your weight, the shoes should feel solid, yet allow your toes to widen, and not feel as if will blister you while walking.
I got a text a few weeks ago from one of my first clients. He recently moved to New York and bought a pair of athletic walking shoes for the purpose, of, walking. The text reads, “These shoes are fully broken in and man are they comfortable walking around NYC. Better than the tennis shoes I bought just for that reason.”
As you can imagine I was thrilled. He received a custom fit and is now seeing just how feasible it is to walk around all day in a pair of shoes that fit, really fit, and also do not contain any fluff, like neoprene insoles and such, which get hot and smell.
By the way – that’s a particular advantage of leather. It absorbs odor well, unlike synthetics.
I believe one of the biggest factors in shoe discomfort is an improper fit.
I mean, Levis has like, I don’t know, 30 different styles/fits in their jeans. We’ve all tried dozens of them on in search of the style that fits our legs, or butt, the best. They have these options because we’re all VERY different sizes and shapes.
So why are shoe sizes so cookie-cutter? The only reason I have is that they come from a factory, and the factory has to repeat the process as inexpensively as possible. I can’t imagine Nike offering a black sneaker in anything more than its standard sizes, they’d otherwise have to offer options with a wide toe box and a narrow heel, or the reverse, and everything in between.
The fact that our feet, like our butts, are unique, varying sizes is why custom fit shoes are important. In fact, one of the reasons I offer the custom fit is because I experienced it for myself, and then realized how different it is.
When I went to school for shoemaking I didn’t realize I would be getting shoes that fit my foot specifically. I just thought I’d be making an 11.5 wide for myself. My teacher showed me how to take measurements for properly sizing feet. When that first pair was completed, and I was walking around in the first pair of shoes, made by myself, and they felt better than any other pair I had worn up to that point – I knew there was something to it.
Standard Handmade is the mash up of my love of shoemaking and the need I saw for high quality shoes that fit well, are comfortable, and are progressively designed.
Standard Handmade shoes are made for you, with you in mind, and according to your foot’s specifications.
Typically I make an appointment with you to measure your feet. However, if you live in a different city or state, I have detailed, yet concise instructions on how to do the measuring yourself. So far, it has worked well. You can find those instructions here.
If you have any questions about them, just ask. I don’t mind getting on the phone with you to help walk you through the measuring process.
Once you’ve taken your measurements and are ready to order, just let me know in the order comments that you will be sending me your measurements.
Interest free payment plans are available, see more here.
